Dell Inspiron 545 Desktop PC Review
Dell came up with Inspiron 545 to reach out to home users. Its straightforward design with no over the top features makes it popular. Hardware specification includes pretty much anything and everything: Intel® Celeron® 450 Processor (2.2GHz, 512k cache) which is supported by 2048MB Dual Channel DDR2 800MHz [2x1024] Memory. As far as optical drive is concerned, this system is shipped with DVD +/- RW Drive (read/write CD & DVD). Overall, the Dell Inspiron 545 desktop PC is a good device to go for your day-to-day computing needs.
Design of Inspiron 545:
Cased in smooth black polish with silver Dell logo embossed on its face makes the system look elegant. The 18-inch wide-screen (S1909WN) black monitor (1366 x 768) matches with the brushed finish of CPU. But you have the option of changing the face colour of the CPU with the colour of your choice. The best part of Inspiron 545 is its availability of colour choice. You have the option of selecting from eight different colours. Black comes by default but other colour choices can be requested with additional cost.
At the front end of the Inspiron 545 Desktop PC system you will find 2 USB ports, headphone jack, and microphone jack. Also, open the front panel door the hidden media card reader will be visible.
The back end is reserved for VGA connector, 4 USB ports, Ethernet port, microphone jack, line in, line out, side surround connector, rear sound connector, and centre subwoofer connector.
The keyboard and mouse décor matches with the piano black polish of the system. The keyboard is a standard Dell USB Entry Keyboard. Black colour Dell 2-button USB scroll optical mouse is also bundled with the system.

The Intel® Celeron® processor designed to support desktop platforms to offer a robust computing experience and outstanding superiority and dependability that you inevitably expect from Intel. With Intel® 64 architecture it delivers 64-bit computing on server, workstation, desktop and mobile platforms but you need to combine it with supporting software. Intel 64 architecture also accelerates performance by allowing systems to tackle more than 4GB of both virtual and physical memory. On top of that it provides support for 64-bit flat virtual address space, 64-bit pointers, 64-bit wide general purpose registers, 64-bit integer support, and up to one terabyte (TB) of platform address space.
The power and performance of the processor fuels the other hardware units that makes the components easy to work with the system. For example the real time access features 2048MB Dual Channel DIMM 240-Pins DDR2 [2x1024] Memory which works at 800MHz. This latest DDR memory guarantees faster speed with low power consumption, higher data bandwidths, lower and enhanced thermal performance. DDR2 memory is an industry’s standards and its memory chips and modules use a naming convention similar to that used for the current DDR memory modules, but are not backward compatible due to incompatible module connections (number of pins), voltage and DRAM technology. DDR2 memory modules have a different key or notch than the same-sized DDR modules to prevent their insertion into an incompatible memory socket. In addition, DDR2 memory chips will incorporate On-Die Termination (ODT) to minimize memory signal reflections at high speeds, thereby improving timing margins. DDR2 memory chips will come in capacities up to 4 Gigabits, allowing for higher-capacity modules.
Permanent storage unit includes 250GB (7200rpm) SATA Hard Drive. It delivers technically advanced acoustics and processing power. A massive 16 MB cache couples with up to 300 MB/s transfer rate make these ultra-fast drives the perfect solution for the fully loaded PC. This hard drives are designed to have the lowest power consumption of any high-capacity, desktop-class hard drive which lowers the operating temperature for enhanced drive reliability. It is also capable of holding up to 212 two-hour of DVD-quality movies, 750 hours of VHS-quality video, 440 days of around-the-clock MP3 audio, 186,500 vivid digital photos, 1066 action-packed games.
For excellent quality video output, the system offers Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100. It is an onboard graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM with 500 MHz core speed and 960GM (400 MHz) chipset (for Merom = Core 2 architecture). Most interesting is the integration of a fully programmable pipeline. The 13.5 Watt current consumption is relatively low, because it includes all chipset functions. It is also capable of transform and Lighting Hardware Support, 32 Bit Floating Point Precision, 16xAF, Occlusion Query, Hardware Clipping, DX10, DirectX9, OpenGl 2.0, Hardware MPEG2 und WMV9 acceleration, 300 MHz RAMDAC, 2 25-112 MHz LVDS Transmitter, and 2 DVO Encoder, TV Encoder.
For smooth flow of data within the CPU unit the system is fitted with PCI, PCI Express x16, and PCI-E expansion slots provides greater room for upgrade.
The interface connections are ample and all-encompassing which includes: Audio - Centre/Bass Out (1/8″ mini), Audio - Line In (1/8″ Mini), Audio - Line Out (1/8″ Mini), Audio - Microphone In (1/8″ Mini), Audio - Rear Surround Out (1/8″ mini), Audio - Side Surround Out (1/8″ mini), Ethernet - RJ45, and USB - Universal Serial Bus 2.0, VGA.

Performance of Inspiron 545:
On the whole, performance of this Inspiron 545 Desktop Computer machine is not very great but certainly very decent.
However, the system has enough room for upgrade. This is definitely possible due to the availability of ample PCI slots. Roomy storage unit makes life real easy. Not only you can save up large size files but you also have the option of compiling all your personal and professional work all in one place. This is definitely a popular feature with most of the Dell computers. With additional cost you can also upgrade the storage unit up to 1.0TB (2X500GB).
Though Inspiron promises multimedia qualities but the vital multimedia feature is missing in this desktop. The system does not come with speakers. Also, running powerful multimedia game is not a good idea. The only thing is in favour is its graphics hardware.
Another disadvantage is the system does not offer basic wireless feature. You need to buy Dell 1505 Wireless-N Network PCIe Card to enable wireless computing. Even 1 year support not offered free and so is the anti-virus protection. You need to buy anti-virus software and support separately.
One should look at Inspiron 545 primarily for home use, capable of performing any administrative work, like word processing, generating reports, editing files, checking e-mail. But internet access is possible when you add modem with this system. Though it is in-built with internet capabilities but does not come with pre-fitted modem. To start internet, add Dell™ v92 Data/Fax modem. Even for basic word processing you need to separately purchase word processing software. If you are handy with open source products you can also consider installing open office.
Overall, the system is in-built with pretty much all the computing features but from the user perspective all you need to do is update the system with required hardware as and when required. Else, use this system as your standalone Home-office workstation.
