iMac All-in-one is Apple’s invention for replacing Mac Mini. Apart from being the best designed All-in-one desktop PC in the market; iMac also impresses in its overall performance and stunning hardware products. With ultra-thin keyboard, glossy screen Apple iMac has larger market in All-in-one industry compare to its other prevailing competitors.

This 20-inch Desktop uses Intel Core 2 Duo with 2.4GHz CPU named as ‘Penryn’ to do its job. The system is further strengthened by inducing Bluetooth complaint high-speed wireless (802.11n) technology for connecting virtually to synchronise your calendar and contacts between your phone and computer. Coupled with Apple’s trademark design and built-in iSight webcam, stereo speakers, and microphone iMac is truly covenant and an attractive package. Software bundled with iMac is also comprehensive including iLife ‘08 suite, Front Row, Photo Booth, iWork ‘08 to make your photo editing experience easy and enjoyable. iMac has gone extra step to help you organize your digital photos, video and audio file by installing Apple’s iLife. iMac’s iLife allows you to try your hands on web designing and composing your own digital music that you can later play it on iTunes music software. This means that you can organize, share, and create all your stuffs out of a single stylish box known as iMac.

Design

Fourth generation Apple iMac further enhances the aesthetic appeal by offering simplistic design, clean lines, aluminum gloss chassis covered by glass in front of the display with super thin keyboard. The glass cover makes the screen crisp and bright.

Appear identical to MacPro and Mac BookPro models, Apple has gone extra mile in giving iMac PC a clean look by tucking into iSight web cam above the screen and slot-loading DVD drive at the right of the monitor, and power button round the back - apparently hiding everything from your immediate view. Four USB ports, mini-DVI video output port, FireWire port including headphone and line-in jacks are at the rear end. Two additional USB ports can be found on the wired aluminum Apple keyboard having laptop-style keys. One of the ports will definitely go for Apple’s mighty mouse and the other for connecting your iPod, Camera, USB key. Or you can also hook on to your wireless Bluetooth keyboard in spite of the weird one.
Mac is always unparallel in designing its displays. iMac is no exception. The monitor has been pied with glossy finish and black surround with 1680 x 1050 resolutions. The size, display, finish, and resolution provide plenty of room for high-end photo and video work.

Apple’s remote control is also packed with the box facilitating long-distance control from your couch. Since the monitor has reflective quality you need to position it under certain lighting condition where there is less display of lights on iMac monitor.

Inside the PC

Apple iMac Desktop PC is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo processor with bus speed 2.4MHz having 1GB RAM expandable up to 2GB of 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM. It has two SO-DIMM slots supporting up to 4GB RAM comprising 6MB shared L2 cache memory.

Storage capacity includes 250GB Serial ATA 7200-rpm hard drive. The graphic and video support features ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT graphics processor with 128MB of GDDR3 memory.

The optical drive offers slot-loading 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW). There is no doubt that roomy storage automatically provides enough space for upgrade and additional installation.

Features

Apple iMac 4th Generation Desktop computer has retained quite a few features from its MacPro days, but it did come up with unique qualities which are worth listing.

With iMac most of the ports are well-blended with the monitor, thus giving a monitor a clean finish. The display has built-in stereo speakers, internal 24-watt digital amplifier, headphone or optical digital audio output (minijack), audio line in or optical digital audio input (minijack), microphone. The system also contains one FireWire 400 port and one FireWire 800 port; 7 watts each. FireWire 800 is beneficial for digital video editors for transferring HD movies through a digital camcorder or from an external device.

With iMac (4th Gen), Apple has for the first time embedded 2.0 USB port into the keyboard. However, the biggest enhancement in iMac is new 802.11n Wi-Fi adaptor. It doubles up the range in terms of data bandwith. To get the benefit of 802.11n you need compatible wireless router. Wi-fi supportability is also boosted up in iMac including: Built-in Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45 connector), built-in AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi wireless networking2; IEEE 802.11a/b/g compatible makes it incredible for your virtual connectivity.

iMac comes with Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard installed which includes bountiful of Apple software: Time Machine, Quick Look, Spaces, Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Safari, Address Book, QuickTime, iCal, DVD Player, Photo Booth, Front Row, Xcode Developer Tools). iMac cannot be complete without Apple’s ubiquitous iLife ’08 comprising of iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb, GarageBand) for enriching your audio and video experience.

Performance

Having ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics chip, iMac is not very popular among 3D game players. But iMac does very well in the field of photo and video editing.

It has perfect configuration to run Mac version of Photoshop CS3 allowing efficient multimedia tasks including making and editing movies. The monitor also helps in working with the graphics, but 24-inch iMac is preferred over 20-inch for multimedia work. Already installed iTunes and CineBench iMac has the ultimate capacity to process movie files.

But, compared to Windows PCs from Velocity Micro and Dell, iMac will disappoint you when you are on gaming spree. Hopefully, Apple will take gaming seriously in future releases of iMac.
